In my case it was done in about 7 minutes. Don’t worry if the speed drops, it will be done relatively quickly, but please do not interrupt the SSH connection!
Wait for it to complete, it will take a few minutes. Now, if you’re in the recovery console, press number 6 and then enter to activate a shell. Note the password that was automatically generated and open any SSH client (I use Kitty in this example).Ĭonnect to the IP of your server with the username root and the password that was automatically generated (without spaces, lowercase!). If it’s black only with no text, click in it and press any key. On the left, click Access, then in the new screen click Access Console.Ī new popup will open. Now we need to access the recovery console. Now turn it back on, by clicking the Off button and it will become On, to indicate the droplet is turned on, but now in recovery mode. The droplet will now be in the Off state: Choose all the default options, the operating system doesn’t matter, but please do not enable Backups or User Data/Cloud Init!Īfter creating the droplet, click on the left side and choose recovery as is shown in the image below:Īfter choosing Recovery, on the new page select Boot from Recovery ISO.Ĭlick the Off button on the droplet panel above, and confirm that you wish to turn it off.

The included image has no license key and requires your own key to be activated, or else it will only work for 60 days as a trial. Please note, it’s not legal to charge people for a Windows image, so what they’re doing might not be legal.
Thanks to good people at, this is now possible! The system image we will be using is provided by them, however they require payment for obtaining the image, so I choose to share the system image for free here. Many people, myself included, wish to run Windows in the Cloud, and find DigitalOcean’s services to be competitively priced, but until now, this was thought to be impossible. Updated for 2019: New link to download is here: įor whatever reason, DigitalOcean chooses not to offer it’s users the ability to run Windows on it’s virtual cloud platform.
I urge you to download the file via the Mega.nz link, if you do not want to wait many hours to download the file.
Update for 2020: Due to stability problems due to very high bandwidth usage, the link on my server is being throttled to 128 KB/s. It looks like configuration management would help here.Caution! This post is more than 3 years old, it may be outdated or incorrect! Please check elsewhere for up-to-date information! Would be nice if we could manage these changes from a single web console.įinally, software updates, managing changes across all the droplets, etc. Would be great if we can avoid having to input this manually.Īpache configuration - obviously this requires us to input certs, change the ServerName values, etc. The other thing we use is tripwire, and it prompts us to create a site and local key. However, there's still several things I need to do individually post-install and was hoping I could automate some of these things.įor example, we want to add swap space to each droplet - so I have to run a few commands: We currently have 27 web sites for our properties and need to be able to quickly deploy.ĭigital Ocean allows us to build a droplet, power it off, create a snapshot, and use that snapshot for future deployments. We are looking to migrate from a shared hosting platform to Digital Ocean.
